Queering the TARDIS – Photography at the Melville Theatre, Abergavenny
Back in August, I had the pleasure of photographing a very special event at the Melville Theatre in Abergavenny: Queering the TARDIS with Emily Garside and John Higgs, a charity evening in support of UCAS, Cardiff.
The day had everything — insight, humour, big ideas, and of course, plenty of hand gestures (which I absolutely love to photograph!). Emily and John didn’t disappoint: their hands were flying almost as fast as their thoughts, and I was more than happy to capture every expressive moment.
The event began with a workshop led by Emily Garside, followed by a lively conversation with John Higgs, where he shared his experiences as a writer with warmth and wit. A Q&A session wrapped up the event, giving the audience the chance to jump in with their own questions.
And because no Doctor Who event would be complete without one — yes, there was a Dalek. Naturally, it became the star of plenty of photos, with audience members making the most of their must-have Dalek moment! There was also a book signing, which gave me the chance to capture those lovely one-to-one interactions between authors and readers.
Photographing events like this is always a challenge (low light, quick movements,), but it’s exactly the kind of challenge I love. The intimacy of the Melville Theatre added to the atmosphere, making the photos feel as personal as the conversations happening in the room.
This was more than just an event for Doctor Who fans — it was a celebration of creativity, storytelling, and community, all while raising funds for a brilliant cause.
