A Night of Jazz and Brazilian Rhythms: Tori Freestone & Huw Warren Quartet at Black Mountain Jazz
On Sunday 19th May 2025, I had the pleasure of photographing the Tori Freestone and Huw Warren Quartet at the Melville Centre in Abergavenny. The evening was a vibrant blend of jazz improvisation and Brazilian choro, creating an unforgettable musical experience.
Pianist Huw Warren, known for his innovative compositions that bridge jazz, classical, and world music, led the ensemble with his dynamic playing. Flautist and saxophonist Tori Freestone brought her robust tenor sound and melodic invention to the performance, adding depth and character to the music. The rhythm section, featuring Yuri Goloubev on double bass and Liz Exell on drums, provided a solid foundation that allowed the melodies to soar.
The quartet's repertoire included pieces from Warren's album Choro Choro Choro, celebrating the vibrant heart of Brazilian music. Their interpretations of works by composers like Ernesto Nazareth and Pixinguinha, as well as Warren's original compositions, showcased their ability to blend tradition with innovation.
Capturing the energy and emotion of this performance was a true joy. Each photograph tells a story of musical connection and shared artistry.
