Swinging into Halloween – A Night with The Swing Project
There’s something special about photographing an event where the energy on the dance floor feels almost electric — and The Swing Project’s Halloween Dance Party in Cardiff last year was exactly that! 👻
As both a photographer and a Lindy Hop dancer myself, I knew this wasn’t just another event to cover. It was a chance to capture the joy, rhythm, and playful chaos that make social dancing so unique. And Halloween brought its own touch of magic — spooky lighting, creative costumes, and dancers who really went all in on the theme.
The atmosphere was fantastic from the start. Between swing tunes and laughter, the floor filled with dancers dressed as witches, skeletons, ghosts, and everything in between. Some even had their faces painted — and let me tell you, swingouts look even better when paired with a little glitter and fake blood!
There was a costume competition, of course. And the winner? A last-minute, classic white sheet ghost. Proof that sometimes the simplest ideas steal the spotlight! 😄
From a photographer’s point of view, the challenge — and the fun — was in capturing all those lively moves and fleeting moments: a twirl mid-air, a burst of laughter between songs, the rhythm in motion. Shooting dancers means being quick, anticipating the beat, and knowing when the perfect moment is about to unfold — something my own dance experience helps with immensely.
I photographed the event last year, and it remains one of my favourite shoots to date. The Swing Project team created such a welcoming and vibrant space for dancers of all levels, and it was a joy to document the evening from behind the lens. Events like this remind me why I love event and dance photography — it’s about more than just pictures. It’s about connection, energy, and people simply having a great time together.
