Exploring New Musical Landscapes: BMJ Collective with Alex Hutton at Black Mountain Jazz
On Sunday, May 11, 2025, I had the pleasure of photographing the BMJ Collective's performance featuring renowned UK jazz pianist and composer Alex Hutton at the Melville Centre for the Arts in Abergavenny. This collaboration was part of the ongoing "BMJ Collective with..." series, which brings together the house band of Black Mountain Jazz with distinguished guest artists.
Alex Hutton is celebrated for his innovative compositions that blend folk, classical, and cinematic influences. His music offers a rich tapestry of textures and emotions, taking listeners on sonic adventures through landscapes and history. Notable works like Songs from The Seven Hills and the Magna Carta Suite showcase his ability to craft evocative melodies that resonate deeply with audiences.
The BMJ Collective, comprising Jack McDougall on saxophones, Nick Kacal on double bass, and Ryan Thrupp on drums, provided a dynamic and responsive foundation for Hutton's explorations. Their synergy on stage was palpable, each musician contributing to a cohesive and immersive musical experience.
Capturing this performance was a true delight. The interplay between the musicians, the emotive depth of the compositions, and the ambiance of the venue all contributed to a memorable evening of jazz.
