Photographing the Rooted in Wales Flower Festival
At the beginning of October, I spent three days photographing the Rooted in Wales Flower Festival at Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery in Merthyr Tydfil.
The festival brought together florists, artists and local organisations, with this year's theme exploring Cynefin, a Welsh word connected with belonging and our relationship with the places around us.
There was quite a lot to photograph, and not just the finished floral displays.
I was interested in seeing how everything came together, so I photographed some of the preparations and behind-the-scenes moments, as well as the festival itself. There were the floral arrangements in the different rooms of the castle, the people behind the work, visitors taking a closer look, conversations and all the little details that can easily go unnoticed.
I always enjoy photographing flowers, but I also found myself looking at the way the arrangements worked with the rooms around them. The colours, textures, shapes and details looked different depending on the light and the space they were in.
My own interest in gardening and garden design made this project particularly enjoyable. It was a chance to bring together two things I have been interested in for a long time: flowers and photography.
Over the three days, I tried to capture not only the finished displays, but also the atmosphere of the festival and some of the people and moments that made it what it was.
